(The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice) – In a press conference today, the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada announced it has filed a lawsuit to shut down Nevada’s new, nearly universal education savings account (ESA) funding for children.
“We will be on the frontlines defending the gold standard of school choice for Nevada families,” said Robert Enlow, president and CEO of the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice. “No one should stand in the way of what’s best for children.”
The academic outcomes of Nevada’s public education system have landed it amongst the bottom states in the nation for years. Taking a bold step in 2015, the state legislature increased public school funding and enacted the ESA funding now under attack. Similar student funding methods are known to provide support to public school families struggling to tailor an education that better fits their children’s needs. And in just a few short weeks, more than 2,800 parents have already signed up.
This lawsuit could rip newfound hope and educational freedom from those and many other families.
