(Cong. Cresent Hardy) – I just wrapped up another busy week in Washington D.C.
One of the highlights of this week was helping to push through The Surface Transportation Reauthorization & Reform Act of 2015, which will designate the extension of a new federal interstate connecting Northern and Southern Nevada.
Countless advocates and leaders have worked over the years to build a better transportation system in Nevada. I am proud to have helped lead through the House a measure that brings this dream one step closer to reality. Connecting Nevada’s two largest cities and the towns in between will advance lucrative business opportunities to strengthen our economy, promote job growth for families in need, and facilitate better access to health care across the state.
This expansion builds a bridge between communities that have been separated for far too long by a seven-hour drive or an expensive flight. Nevadans are already well connected by our Western heritage and shared values; it’s about time they were connected by a reasonable transportation network.
After the House version is passed, it will be considered against a similar version passed before it can be sent to the president’s desk for his signature.
Connecting women in small business to resources for success
This week, in North Las Vegas, our office was able to help connect women-owned small businesses and women aspiring to own their own business to new resources. We shared information on building and improving credit, reducing debt, applying for business loans and much more at my Women’s Back to Business Workshop.
Participants received practical information from small business experts with the Nevada Small Business Administration and the Women’s Business Center on how to effectively operate a business.
Attendees also had the opportunity to hear from Christy Echols, President of the Southern Nevada National Association of Women Business Owners. She shared her personal experience on successfully managing her own business.
As a former small business owner, I understand the struggles that small business owners face. I am glad we could help bring together women who want to start or advance their small businesses.
President Barack Obama’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act
Earlier this week, President Obama made the troubling decision to veto of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). President Obama is playing politics with our national security and the welfare of our troops simply because he wants Congress to exceed domestic spending caps that he signed into law.
Congress matched his defense funding request dollar for dollar, but instead, he is holding hostage our national security and the welfare of our troops by vetoing the NDAA.
What’s even worse is that this comes one week after he extended operations in Afghanistan. President Obama is signaling that the troops will only get what they need if he gets what he wants.
Our troops deserve better.
Thanks for taking the time to let me share with you all that’s going on this week for our nation and Nevada’s 4th Congressional District!
Let’s keep the conversation going, even when I am back in Washington. If you have a question for me, please reach out to my District Office at (702) 912-1634 or my Washington D.C. office at (202) 225-9894.
