(Jeff Carter) – Democrats are screaming about Trump’s tariff regime. Tariffs are nuanced, and there is no nuance in politics.
Believe me. Go in front of a group of Republicans and try to explain it, and when you leave, they will say you are anti-Trump.
There is no strong positive correlation between tariffs and inflation.
What causes inflation? Government spending.
Here is a short video of Milton Friedman discussing inflation. There are plenty of other longer videos on the internet, and I posted this because attention spans are short.
Government spending causes inflation. Period.
Let’s look at the past six years. We spent trillions to combat Covid when we shouldn’t have.
Shutting down the economy, triple masking, a vaccine that never worked, and all the other things we did were incredibly misguided.
As soon as Biden got into office, the Democrats passed a gigantic spending bill. The Inflation Reduction Act poured gasoline on the fire.
These aren’t talking points. We have data.
Look at Argentina.
Argentina was a joke in professional financial circles. Rampant inflation. Socialist government. Lots of people on the dole. Their debt always defaulted.
There was always a tinge of disappointment because prior to 1920, Argentina was a prosperous country. It has great natural resources.
They elected Javier Milei.
He is a follower of Hayek. Fortunately for Argentina, Milei had enough support inside the government to enact the things he wanted to enact.
Milei took a chainsaw to government spending. He deregulated. He eliminated all kinds of taxes and tariffs.
0.Look what happened.

In the US, we have embraced Keynesian economics for the most part since FDR was elected. Trump is a populist. He doesn’t have an economic intellectual center.
He’s done some very good things. DOGE, despite criticism in the mainstream media, has been excellent. We are uncovering all kinds of fraud in all kinds of government systems.
Scott Bessent said the Treasury stopped $185MM in payments from going to dead people.
You’d think we’d all agree that getting rid of fraud and making government more efficient would be a good thing.
For Democrats, it’s not.
Tariffs will not bring economic prosperity to America. Cutting taxes and regulations will.
There were a few on the left who finally started to see it. They called it embracing “abundance”. Put simply, that is supply-side economics.
Increase supply, prices go down, and competition increases.
Virtually everything the government interferes with or tries to fix gets more expensive.
How are your healthcare costs? Education costs? Costs of operating and owning a car?
The answer isn’t more government or, God forbid, socialism.
The answer is getting a significantly smaller government with fewer taxes and regulations.
If you just ended the capital gains tax and corporate tax, the amount of investment in America you’d see from companies would explode.
This isn’t hard.
