Doug Schoen, a longtime Democratic strategist and former adviser to President Bill Clinton, is issuing a warning to his own party.
Schoen says Democrats are in the middle of a growing fight.
Not against Republicans. Against themselves.
A Party Split in Two
On one side, you’ve got the old-school Democrats.
Think moderates. The kind who used to talk about balanced budgets, strong borders, and tough-on-crime policies.
On the other side, you’ve got the progressive wing.
That group is pushing ideas like open borders, wealth taxes, and more government involvement in everyday life.
According to Schoen, that fight isn’t new. But it’s getting louder. And it’s starting to matter more.
He says this battle will shape not just the next election, but who leads the party heading into 2028.
Moving Left… Maybe Too Far?
Schoen argues the Democratic Party has already shifted left over the past decade.
He points out that even former President Barack Obama once held positions that today’s progressives would reject.
President Joe Biden, who ran as a moderate, ended up governing in a more progressive direction, according to Schoen.
That shift, he says, could be a problem.
Why?
Because elections aren’t won on the edges. They’re won in the middle.
The Numbers Tell a Story
Schoen points to polling data showing something interesting.
Even Democratic voters often prefer moderate candidates over progressive ones in competitive races.
Groups like Third Way and Split Ticket have found the same thing. Moderates tend to perform better where elections are close.
And if your own voters lean one way, and your party leaders go another, you’ve got some serious disconnect.
AOC and the New Energy
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez raised over $15 million and has a massive online fundraising base.
That kind of support gives progressives real power. It makes it harder for moderates to push back.
And that’s exactly what Schoen is worried about.
What This Means for Nevada
Nevada is a swing state. Candidates here don’t win by appealing to just one side.
If national Democrats keep moving left, it could put Nevada Democrats in a tough spot.
Do they follow the national party?
Or do they adjust to what voters actually want?
