MUTH’S TRUTHS
When I’m recruiting candidates to run, one of the biggest objections I hear is they can’t run because they can’t afford to spend all the time “required” to knock doors. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
In response to my Muth’s Truths column yesterday (link below) about the GOP’s failed get-out-the-vote programs and door-knocking, I received several emails from candidates seconding my emotion.
Here’s one example:
“Thanks, Chuck. This cycle, my team and I knocked on 10,000 doors because I was told that was the way to win. It wasn’t the way, at least not for me.”
Again, I’m not opposed to knocking doors.
I’m opposed to knocking doors mindlessly without a strategy, without a persuasive message, without any way to actually measure the results, and using door-knocking as a substitute for the far more important task of fundraising.
We’re killing our candidates by brow-beating them into spending 8 hours a day in the blazing sun, 7 days a week, all because self-proclaimed “experts” say that’s what they have to do.
They don’t.
If they want to, they can. But plenty of better-managed campaigns win every cycle with smarter campaign strategies that are far more effective…and, frankly, in this day and age, less dangerous.
“Walking” is no silver bullet. Stop treating it as if it is.
P.S. I developed a new volunteer activity for my coaching clients this morning that’s a gazillion times better and more effective than door-knocking – and can be done by any volunteer from the privacy and comfort of their own home – at the time of their choosing, day or night.
But, yeah, go ahead and keep hiring the same high-priced consultants who do the same thing over and over and keep losing races they should have won.
