Major Federal Investment Heads to Nevada

Governor Joe Lombardo just delivered big news for rural Nevada.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services awarded nearly $180 million to the Nevada Health Authority for the first year of the new federal Rural Health Transformation Program.

This funding is part of a five-year, $50 billion initiative that Congress authorized earlier this year in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Governor Lombardo said:

“Thanks to this landmark investment, Nevada is positioned to make meaningful advancements in support of the state’s rural health care system,”

He continued:

“These funds will help connect rural Nevadans to health care by strengthening critical infrastructure, attracting a more robust healthcare workforce, and accelerating healthcare technology innovation in our rural communities.”

All 50 states competed for these federal funds, and Nevada came out a winner. The five-year grant period runs from December 29, 2025, through October 30, 2030. States must reapply each year for continued funding from the $50 billion total pool.

Four Strategic Initiatives to Help Rural Communities

The Governor’s office outlined four major initiatives that will use this funding to expand healthcare access in rural communities across Nevada.

The Rural Health Outcomes Accelerator Program will promote new ways to prevent and manage chronic diseases. This includes online collaborative care strategies, remote and hybrid approaches to care, digital patient health management tools, and virtual provider mentorship programs.

Think of it as bringing modern healthcare options to folks who live far from major medical centers.

The Flex Fund for Rural Providers will help modernize rural healthcare infrastructure. This means money for new technology, equipment, supplies, mobile units, and emergency services.

The state plans to encourage regional purchasing strategies and shared-service arrangements to stretch these dollars further. All funds must be used within Nevada healthcare facilities.

The Workforce Recruitment and Rural Access Program tackles one of rural Nevada’s biggest challenges – getting doctors and nurses to work in small towns.

Nevada will offer new incentives for providers to live and serve in rural areas, tuition aid for those who commit to serving rural Nevada, and a rural physician residency program.

The Rural Health Innovation and Technology Grants will support new technologies and modernize health information systems.

These funds will focus on strengthening cybersecurity and bolstering rural telehealth infrastructure, making it easier for rural residents to see specialists without driving for hours.

Creating a Steering Committee for Oversight

To guide this important work, Nevada will establish a Rural Health Transformation Steering Committee. Members will be appointed by the Nevada Health Authority Director with approval from Governor Lombardo.

The committee will include representatives from rural health systems and communities, along with state, local, and tribal health representatives.

This committee will monitor progress across all initiatives and recommend adjustments to ensure the Rural Health Transformation Plan stays on track with federal goals while delivering real improvements in rural healthcare statewide.

Nevadans interested in serving on the steering committee can apply through Nevada’s Rural Health Transformation website. The deadline to submit applications is January 19, 2026.

Next Steps and Public Input

The Nevada Health Authority will announce opportunities for organizations to apply for Rural Health Transformation Program funding later this spring and summer. They’ll share information through public workshops, the Nevada Rural Health Transformation website, the NVHA ListServ, and other communication channels.

A virtual Winter Stakeholder Update Workshop is scheduled for January 27, 2026, at 1:00 PM. This meeting will include updates on bill implementation, major projects, and current information about the Rural Health Transformation Program in Nevada.

What This Means for Rural Nevada

For rural Nevadans who’ve struggled with limited healthcare access, this investment represents a significant opportunity. Emergency services could get stronger. More doctors might actually choose to practice in small towns. Telehealth options could expand, letting people see specialists without leaving their communities.

Governor Lombardo’s successful effort to secure this funding shows Nevada competing effectively at the federal level. While other states also received funding, Nevada’s share represents a substantial investment in our rural communities’ future.

Rural residents, healthcare providers, and community leaders should watch for upcoming announcements about how to access these funds. Whether you run a rural clinic, serve on a hospital board, or just care about healthcare in your community, these programs will offer opportunities to strengthen local healthcare services.
