IRS Hiring 360 Armed Agents Across All 50 States

IRS Hiring 360 Armed Agents Across All 50 States

(American for Tax Reform) – We’ve just learned that the IRS is hiring 360 armed agents across all 50 states with plans to bring that number to 1,200 in the coming years. The IRS has more than 4,600 firearms in its stockpile and nearly 5 million rounds of ammunition.

That’s some serious firepower for the tax collection agency.

Where are they getting all of this money? The Democrats’ misnamed Inflation Reduction Act gave the IRS $80 billion in additional funding. President Biden and the Democrats at the time promised it would be used for more audits on wealthy Americans, but you don’t do tax audits with guns!

Republicans on Capitol Hill recently confronted the IRS commissioner about this scandal in a recent hearing. Here’s what he said…

REP. SMITH: “It’s my understanding from a communication I received from your agency last fall that Criminal Investigations plans to hire 360 special agents per year – per year – over the next five years for an approximate net gain of 1,200 special agents considering attrition. Is that accurate?“

WERFEL: “That sounds about right. Again Criminal investigation Division deals with fraud and significant cases of tax evasion.”

REP. SMITH: “Correct, and those special agents are armed, is that correct?”

WERFEL: “They are armed. It’s less than 3 percent of the IRS workforce.”

Even more worrisome, the IRS agents aren’t particularly skilled at using firearms. An internal government report shows that IRS agents accidentally fire their weapons more than they do on purpose!

It’s clear that the IRS shouldn’t be trusted with more armed agents and we at Americans for Tax Reform are going to keep shining a spotlight on this embarrassing proposal.
