Longtime Washoe County resident, community advocate, and former Planning Commission Chair Larry Chesney announced today that he is officially running for Washoe County Commissioner, District 5.
Chesney, who has lived and worked in Northern Nevada for decades, brings a reputation for transparency, accountability, and independence to the race. A familiar name to residents in Warm Springs, Palomino Valley, and throughout rural Washoe County, Chesney has spent years representing local voices at the county level — serving as Chair of the Washoe County Planning Commission, Chair of the Warm Springs/Rural Citizens Advisory Board, and an active leader in community infrastructure and planning efforts.
“I’m running because Washoe County deserves leadership that listens, respects taxpayer dollars, and puts residents before politics,” said Chesney. “For too long, decisions that impact our neighborhoods, rural lands, and local priorities have been made without meaningful community input. That needs to change.”
As the publisher of Picon Press Nevada, Chesney has been an outspoken advocate for government transparency, ethical leadership, and fiscal responsibility. He has been deeply engaged in civic issues ranging from land use and growth management to public accountability and open meeting compliance.
If elected, Chesney says his top priorities will include:
- Restoring trust between county leadership and residents through honest communication and open processes.
- Ensuring responsible growth that balances development with infrastructure and water resources.
- Protecting rural voices and local control in planning, zoning, and public safety decisions.
- Demanding fiscal accountability for taxpayer-funded programs and agencies.
“District 5 deserves a commissioner who will ask tough questions, push for real answers, and keep government working for the people — not the other way around,” Chesney added.
Chesney’s campaign emphasizes his record of service and his belief that effective local government starts with listening to the people it serves.
