Nevada GOP Had a Clear Path to Flip AD41… Then This Happened

Sometimes politics feels like watching your favorite team fumble the ball right before the end zone.

That’s pretty much where Nevada Republicans find themselves this week.

With a real shot at flipping three State Senate seats and taking back the upper chamber, party leaders had been lining up strong candidates in key districts.

One of those moves involved Kelly Chapman, an experienced campaigner who agreed to forsake running for a safe Republican seat and step into a much tougher race in Assembly District 41.

Why? Because it was the right thing to do.

After Rafael Arroyo announced he’d run for Senate District 12 instead of AD41, leaders from Joe Lombardo’s campaign and the Assembly GOP encouraged Chapman to move into AD41.

It’s a Democrat-held seat and one of the party’s best chances to flip this cycle.

Chapman could’ve played it safe. AD23 is solid Republican territory and an “open” seat. Win the primary – coast through November – done.

But she didn’t.

She chose the harder road. She changed her registration. She started moving her family back into AD41. She stepped up to help the team.

And then, right on cue, Nevada Republicans did what they do best.

Blow a golden opportunity.

A Surprise Primary Nobody Asked For

At a Nevada Republican Club lunch this week, a first-time candidate named Tofuola Alofipo announced she’d be primarying Chapman in AD41.

Most voters had never heard of her.

She’s reportedly lived in Nevada for only about five years.

Her voting record here shows participation only in the 2022 and 2024 general elections. No Republican primaries. No history of GOP activism. No prior campaign experience.

Yet now she’s jumping into one of the most important Assembly races in Clark County.

That means instead of focusing on beating Democrats in November, Republicans will burn time and money fighting each other first.

That’s not strategy. That’s a self-inflicted wound.

Experience vs. Inexperience

Chapman isn’t new to this. Her run in Assembly District 8 last cycle helped Republicans flip the overlapping State Senate seat in 2024.

She’s proven. She knows the neighborhoods. She’s lived in southern Clark County her entire life, all 46 years of it.

In fact, Chapman previously lived in AD41 itself before the lines were redrawn in 2021.

Her family lived on Sprucebough Street and Marlia Street. Her mother-in-law still lives in the district.

Meanwhile, critics are calling Chapman a “carpetbagger” because she’s moving back into AD41 for the race.

That argument doesn’t hold water.

Her current home is practically across the street from the district line. Same schools. Same grocery stores. Same community. Just a political boundary on a map.

If moving a few neighborhoods away makes someone a carpetbagger, Nevada politics is in trouble.

Identity Politics Isn’t a Winning Plan

Supporters of the new candidate have offered some eyebrow-raising reasons for this late entry: she’s Pacific Islander, she’s Mormon, and she has six kids.

That’s not a campaign strategy. That’s identity politics.

Voters care about experience, ideas, and results. Not checkboxes.

Republicans already had a strong, coordinated plan. Chapman in AD41. Arroyo in SD12. Two proven candidates working together to flip two seats.

It was shaping up to be a perfect storm. Now it’s shaping up to be a perfect mess.

The Bigger Picture

Every dollar spent in a needless primary is a dollar not spent defeating Democrats. Every week lost to internal drama is a week not spent knocking doors and talking to voters.

Nevada conservatives talk a lot about accountability, smart spending, and winning elections.

This moment is a test of all three.

Chapman stepped up when the party needed her. Instead of backing the proven candidate in a winnable district, some wannabe-Karl Roves chose to stir the pot.

That’s how opportunities slip away.

And sadly, it’s a story Nevada Republicans know all too well. The GOP never seems to blow and opportunity to blow an opportunity.

Winning means putting the team first. If Republicans want to flip AD41 and take back the Senate, they’d better stop tripping over themselves and get back to beating Democrats.
