I feel a disturbance in The Force.
The intensity of opposition to the Hollywood Handout among conservatives is right up there with conservative opposition to the largest tax hike in Nevada history back in 2015.
So now would be a good time to remind everyone what happened to some of the GOP sell-outs after they sold out.
Assemblymen Randy Kirner and Lynn Stewart saw the writing on the wall and quit rather than risk losing at the ballot box in 2016.
Sen. Patricia Farley switched parties and did not seek re-election in 2018. Sens. Greg Brower and Becky Harris also did not seek re-election that year.
Sen. “Tax Hike Mike” Roberson decided to run for Congress in 2016 rather than re-election…and lost.
Assemblyman Pat Hickey ran for the Board of Education…and lost.
Assemblyman Erv Nelson ran for the State Senate…and lost.
Assemblymen Glenn Trowbridge and P.K. O’Neill drew conservative GOP primary challengers…and lost. (O’Neill came back…and just voted for the Hollywood Handout; once a sell-out, alwasy a sell-out).
Assemblymen David Gardner, Derek Armstrong and Stephen Silberkraus – the “Three RINOs” (Republicans in Name Only) – survived primary challenges but in the general election…lost.
Assemblyman James Oscarson was challenged in the primary in 2018 by Dennis Hof who ran against his tax-hike vote…and lost.
Assemblyman Chris Edwards was primaried two election cycles later by Annie Black – who ran against his “voted for it before voting against it” record – and lost.
And Assembly Speaker John Hambrick not only lost his GOP majority but was completely ousted from any leadership position in the GOP caucus.
Republicans who vote for – or aid and abet passage of the Hollywood Handout – will be remembered at the ballot box by conservative voters next year.
Conservatives will vote for a challenger in GOP primaries (avoidably costly) and/or vote for a third-party candidate or “None of the Above” in the general – or will just stay home.
And those “lost” votes could well cost Republicans in close statewide and congressional races. As conservative icon Morton Blackwell warns in his Laws of the Public Policy Process:
“You cannot make friends of your enemies by making enemies of your friends.”
Republicans are their own worst enemy.
