Democrats, including Rep. Susie Lee (D-NV), are saying the idea to eliminate taxes on tips came from them.
They say they led the charge.
They say they’ve been fighting for workers all along.
Sounds great. There’s just one problem.
Here’s What Really Happened
When the bill that actually made “no tax on tips” a reality hit the floor, Susie Lee voted against it.
Not “missed the vote.” Not “voted present.” She voted no.
The policy became law as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed by President Trump on July 4, 2025. That law included:
- A tax deduction of up to $25,000 in tips through 2028
- No tax on overtime and Social Security, also temporary
- Broader tax reforms and spending changes
Those are facts. Not opinions.
And here’s another fact, straight from Lee’s own words in her official op-ed:
She said she “rushed back to Washington to vote against” the bill and called it a “partisan tax scam.”
That’s not a misquote. That’s her.
So let’s be crystal clear. The law passed. Tips got tax relief. And Susie Lee voted against the bill that made it happen.
The Spin Machine Kicks In
Now comes the part that would be funny if it wasn’t so brazen.
In a recent TV interview, Lee says the idea came from Nevada Democrats and suggests President Trump is “forgetting” who started it.
Shameless @SusieLeeNV voted AGAINST No Tax on Tips, stiffing Nevada’s waitresses, bartenders, and hotel workers.
Now that it’s popular and putting real money back in their pockets, suddenly she’s on TV pretending she led the charge.

That’s like someone refusing to help build a house, then showing up at the ribbon cutting claiming they designed it.
Lee’s defense is that she didn’t oppose the tip policy itself. She opposed the rest of the bill.
But that’s like saying, “I support your pay raise. I just voted to make sure you never get it.”
At the end of the day, results matter.
Nevada workers don’t get paid in talking points. They don’t get tax relief from press releases. They get it from laws that pass.
And this one passed without her support.
Why This Matters in Nevada
This isn’t some abstract policy fight. In Las Vegas, tips are income. Real income. Rent money. Grocery money.
Servers, bartenders, valets, hotel staff. Thousands of Nevadans depend on tips every single day.
So when a law finally delivers tax relief on those tips, it matters here more than almost anywhere else in the country.
And that’s why this political two-step stands out.
Because Nevada workers can see the difference between: “I supported the idea” and
“I supported the law that made it happen”
Here’s the clean, simple truth.
Susie Lee supported the concept. She opposed the bill that made it law. Now she’s trying to take a victory lap anyway.
You can agree or disagree with the larger bill. That’s fair. But you can’t rewrite the vote.
So here’s the real question Nevada voters should be asking:
If your representative votes against the bill that puts money back in your pocket – then turns around and takes credit for it – why are you still sending her back to Washington?
