“We’re Proud to Be American”: Team USA Shut Down Critics After Gold Medal Win

Just days after pulling off one of the biggest wins in American sports history, the U.S. men’s Olympic hockey team touched down back home with gold medals around their necks and a White House invitation waiting.

After defeating Canada 2–1 in overtime at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, Team USA boarded a presidential U.S. Air Force 757.

The special flight brought the players from Miami to Joint Base Andrews so they could attend Trump’s State of the Union address on February 24.

The win ended a 46-year drought for U.S. men’s hockey. The last time America took gold was the legendary Miracle on Ice.

For a lot of Americans, including plenty of us here in Nevada, it felt like a long-overdue moment for some national pride everyone could all agree on.

But not everyone was willing to put politics aside.

Reports say that members of the U.S. women’s hockey team declined a similar White House visit, citing political differences.

Team USA member Jack Hughes sees it differently. He made it clear the team wasn’t there to play politics.

Honest and classy.

Hughes wasn’t alone, either. His brother Quinn was on the ice with him, making the gold medal win a family affair.

Oh, and his mom played hockey for the women’s national team, too. It doesn’t get much more American-dream than that.

Some on the left accused the team of siding with Trump. Supporters say the players earned this moment for their country, and deserve to enjoy it without being dragged into partisan fights.

Hard work matters. Winning, surprising as it may be to some, matters. And standing up for yourself matters.

Opponents argue that Trump’s presence turns every celebration into a political statement. Maybe so.

But Jack Hughes said it best: They’re athletes. They’re proud to represent the United States, and proud to be Americans.

And after bringing home the gold on the tails of a 46 year slump, they’ve got no shortage of things to celebrate.

This Olympic win is yet another reminder that when Americans come together, even for a moment, great things happen.
