(Chuck Muth) – My daughter Jenna’s “best friend,” Prancer, successfully had her cancer-ridden hind leg removed and is back home with us recovering.
Here’s a picture of Jenna and Prancer seeing each other at the animal hospital for the first time after the surgery…
That’s a pair of happy campers!
Tissue samples were taken during the operation to determine if the cancer had spread before amputating the leg. We’re told after the tests come back in a week or so that Prancer will probably have to take a chemo pill every week for 5 or 6 weeks to kill any cancer cells that might have spread.
At $500 bucks each.
Ouch!
But as they say, in for a penny, in for a pound. Jenna’s gonna be doing a lot of odd jobs and chores for the next few months to augment the money raised via her GoFundMe campaign for the operation.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to Jenna’s effort! She successfully raised enough money to pay for the surgical procedure, with a little left over to use for the post-surgery chemo pills.
On the other hand, one naysayers wrote and told me I should “Just open your wallet” rather than have Jenna work for and raise the money.
First, we did. It cost Gia and I over $800 in initial doctor bills, tests and medications before the surgery. Believe me, as Donald Trump would say, we have a skin in this game.
Secondly, what kind of lesson would that have taught Jenna?
This “just give your kids everything” mentality is why so many millennials in their 30’s are still living in mom’s basement. Thanks, but that’s not how we want to raise our kids.
Lastly, one person wrote and suggested that I had written that letter for Jenna.
Not true. Again, (a) what kind of lesson would that have been to teach her? And (b) if I’d written it, it wouldn’t have been as genuine and heartfelt…which is exactly why I told her SHE had to write it, not me or mom.
Here’s a photo of Jenna’s original, handwritten letter for any Doubting Thomases out there…
All I did was give her an outline of what should be included in the letter and then did some minor editing and formatting when I uploaded it into the website (which you can still see at www.JennaMuth.com).
I’m very proud of my little girl. She wrote a GREAT letter and saved her dog.
And learned some valuable lessons about fundraising that they sure as heck don’t teach in public schools.
Again, thank you to everyone who kicked in for Jenna’s “Save Prancer” campaign and/or said a prayer for them. I’ll keep posted on Prancer’s progress and hope she remains with our family for many years to come.
Cheers.
