(Stephen Moore) – Any half-sane person would agree that the new redistricting map in Virginia is an abomination.
And, yes, we know both parties are using Gerrymandering as a way to effectively disenfranchise voters from the other party (Texas). It’s the opposite of democracy, representative government and good government – virtues liberals used to say they care about.
Except when those things interfere with their overriding goal of political power.
The big story of the new map passed by 51.5% to 48.5% last night, was that the counties with the most Democrats and college educated voters overpowered the rest of the state.
Supposedly “smart” people voted for this. Clearly this was a vote to say: “I hate Trump so much, I’m willing to trash the concept of fair representation.”
The tortured map is likely to turn the state’s 6 to 5 Democratic advantage in the U.S. House into a 10 to 1 result or 9-2 advantage.
Roughly 53% of the voters are Democrats and now they will have 80 to 90 percent of the representation in Congress.
Yes, that sounds fair.
Where was that great elder statesman Barack Obama to stop this steal? Oh, never mind. He was against gerrymandering before now being for it.
The Virginia Supreme Court may overturn this “might-makes-right” scheme, though we’re always reluctant to see judges overturn the will of the people – as foolish as that decision may be.
Practically speaking, this means that Northern Virginia’s population of federal bureaucrats and Beltway Bandits will dominate the majority of the state’s House delegation, with one seat stretching in a narrow corridor from Reagan National Airport near DC all the way down to Colonial Williamsburg.
