Attorney General Laxalt’s Public Integrity Unit announces indictment for Perjury Charge against former Assembly Candidate

Office of the Attorney General logo(Office of the Attorney General) – Las Vegas – Nevada Attorney General Adam Paul Laxalt announced that former candidate for the Assembly, Meghan Smith, 36, of Las Vegas, was indicted by the Clark County Grand Jury on a felony charge of perjury arising from her filing for State Assembly District 34 in 2014. She won the democratic primary, but in an October 2014 ruling, District Court Judge Nancy Allf declared Smith ineligible for office when she found Smith failed to meet the residency requirement for that office. The indictment alleges Smith made false statements under penalty of perjury in her Declaration of Residency form filed on March 14, 2014.

“Our office is committed to protecting the sanctity of fair and transparent elections,” said Laxalt. “Every violation of the electoral process erodes the public’s trust in its government, a trust this office seeks to safeguard by enforcing the law.”

Smith is set to appear in front of District Court Judge Kerry Early on May 14, 2015 for arraignment.

An indictment is a statement of charges against a defendant. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
