Congresswoman points fingers at tariffs while airline cutbacks, sky-high resort fees, and a dead budget carrier tell the real story
Rep. Susie Lee wants Nevadans to believe one thing is responsible for our tourism slowdown: Donald Trump.

It's a simple message. It fits on a bumper sticker. And it's not the whole truth.
Yes, Las Vegas had a rough 2025. Visitor numbers dropped 7.5% from the year before, the worst non-pandemic year in Vegas history. Canadian visits fell 17.4%.
Those numbers are real, and nobody's arguing otherwise. But here's what Susie Lee's tweet leaves out.
Spirit Airlines went bankrupt. The budget carrier that brought countless price-sensitive travelers to Las Vegas shut down in 2025. That's not a tariff. That's an airline going out of business.
Airline capacity from Canada was slashed by 35 to 40 percent. Fewer seats on fewer flights means fewer visitors, full stop, regardless of what's happening at the trade negotiating table.
Vegas got expensive, and tourists noticed. Resort fees, parking charges, and food prices on the Strip have been driving away visitors for years.
Casino owner Derek Stevens has talked publicly about tourists cutting back on dining because of high prices. That's a Vegas pricing problem, not a Washington tariff problem.
Every part of the country is seeing softer international travel. Industry analysts point to changing travel habits, rising vacation costs, and broader economic uncertainty across all of North America, not just Canada, not just tariffs.
Put those four factors together and you get most of the story.
Tariffs are part of the picture. Nobody's denying that trade tension with Canada has played some role in Canadian sentiment toward visiting the U.S.
But “some role” is very different from what Susie Lee is selling, which is that Trump is the reason your neighbor's hotel job is in trouble.
Even the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority isn't treating this as a simple tariff story.
They're spending millions on a marketing campaign to win Canadian travelers back, because they know this is a relationship and perception problem that needs rebuilding, not a math problem that gets solved the moment a tariff gets repealed.
And here's the part Lee really doesn't want you to notice: UNLV's own economic researchers are forecasting a rebound in 2026, with visitor numbers expected to climb back toward 40 million.
If tariffs were the single cause Lee claims, why would the recovery be starting now, while trade tension with Canada is still very much unresolved?
The truth is Susie Lee is in a tough reelection fight in one of the most competitive House seats in the country.
Blaming Trump for every problem in Southern Nevada is a campaign strategy, not an economic analysis.
Nevada voters deserve a congresswoman who tells them the truth about why our tourism economy is struggling, not one who picks the explanation that's most convenient for her campaign ads.
The honest answer involves airline bankruptcies, sky-high resort fees, and a tourism industry adjusting after the pandemic. It's more complicated than a tweet.
But Nevadans can handle complicated. What we can't afford is a congresswoman who won't tell it to us straight.
