It’s hard to tell by the look on her face when German Chancellor Angela Merkel isn’t a happy camper because…well, she always looks like she just bit into a lemon-infused dill pickle.

But Merkel is clearly unhappy with President Donald Trump’s message to NATO, delivered in person last week at the summit in Brussels.

Trump’s message remains consistent with positions he took during last year’s election: We remain allies, but European nations must pay their fair share for defense.  No more free ride on the backs of U.S. taxpayers.

Merkel appears to have finally gotten the message, declaring that Europe “really must take our fate into our own hands.”

It’s a simple concept.  If you own a business and want security services, you hire a security company. And you pay them for their service.  Even if all you do is buy a guard dog, you still have to pay to feed him every day.

President George W. Bush talked a lot about establishing a “new world order.”  President Trump is actually creating one.  But this one is to America’s benefit.  So let it be written; so let it be done.

P.S.  On this Memorial Day, as the world continues to wrestle with the barbaric scourge of radical Islamic terrorism, this famous quote by Thomas Paine, written on December 23, 1776, bears remembrance…

The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Or as President Ronald Reagan famously said in his tribute to fallen World War II soldiers in a speech at Omaha Beach on the 40th Anniversary of D-Day in 1984…

“We will always remember. We will always be proud. We will always be prepared, so we may always be free.”

In reading Clark County School Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky’s recent column (“Give voucher money to Clark County School District,” 5/22/17) in opposition to funding the Education Savings Account (ESA) program – which I proudly voted for as an assemblyman in 2015 – I had a hard time figuring out if his opinion was based on ignorance or arrogance.  Talk about “alternative facts”!

Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures?

While Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Beers seems quite confident of his re-election on June 13, his supporters don’t seem so sure.  Indeed, they’ve sunk to the level of trotting out incendiary, decade-old divorce documents of his challenger, Steve Seroka.

The Beers backers have used his ex-wife’s claims to attack Seroka in a ham-handed over-the-top mailer and a two-page spread advertisement in Sunday’sLas Vegas Review-Journal talking, for some reason, about the Fifth Amendment (huh?) and featuring a very flattering photo of a smiling Seroka (huh?).

Seroka is lucky that while the Beers backers have money, they don’t have a clue.
