Tai Babilonia
After being forced to withdraw from the 1980 Olympics when her skating partner was injured, Babilonia turned pro. But a sense of isolation led to alcoholism. In 1988, Life After 50 reports, she decided she no longer wanted to live.
“I just decided to take the easy way out,” Babilonia recalled. She took an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol, but just before passing out she called her mother and told her what she’d done. Fortunately, paramedics arrived in time to save her life.
“In retrospect,” the skater confided, “I consider my suicide attempt more of a cry for help than a true desire to take my own life. But I can only say that now, looking back.”
