The “60 Minutes” newsman suffered from severe depression around 1982 in the midst of defending himself in a major lawsuit brought by former Gen. William Westmoreland over a documentary Wallace did on the Vietnam War.

“In an interview with the PBS program ‘Healthy Minds,’” the New York Daily News reported in 2012, “he recounted the evening he decided to end his life. He wrote out a suicide note leaving money to various people and took an overdose of pills.

“His wife Mary found him and he was taken to the hospital to have his stomach pumped.  It was only then that he began the long road to receiving psychiatric care.”
