According to NNDB.com, the wildly popular drummer for The Monkeys TV sitcom “attempted suicide by walking into traffic and sitting down” after Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith left the group and his “first marriage was collapsing.”

Dolenz himself describes the incident in his autobiography…

“Harry Nilsson tells the story of how he called me up one night to see how I was doing. I must have sounded terrible because he came over immediately, only to find me sitting in the middle of the street, holding a half-empty bottle of Scotch, waiting to get hit by a car. (I must have still been in possession of some of my faculties because I did pick a street with very little traffic.) He brought me over to my friend Don Johnson’s house, where I slept it off.”
